Thomson Chinese Medicine - TCM Clinic Singapore

Thomson Chinese Medicine was first established in 2009 within Thomson Medical Centre to support fertility patients undergoing IVF. We have since evolved from a single TCM clinic in Singapore to be a multi-disciplinary practice meeting the different health needs of both adults and children across various locations in Singapore.

Our physicians are experienced in utilising traditional chinese medicine to benefit patients in Singapore, ranging from fertility support to pain management and promoting children’s health. We work closely with patients who are concurrently receiving treatments from paediatric or fertility clinics, ensuring that both TCM and Western therapies work in tandem to meet patient’s medical needs.

At Thomson Chinese Medicine, our practice is deeply rooted in ancient TCM wisdom, and our holistic approach ensures that patients receive the highest levels of care through safe, tailored, and effective treatments.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is TCM good for?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is an ancient medicinal practice that has been used in China for more than 3,500 years. Whereas Western medicine focuses on treating the root cause of diseases, TCM looks at your overall well-being—balance, harmony, and energy. It treats a number of health issues including fertility, pain management, insomnia, stress, digestive issues, and other chronic and/or acute problems as well.

What are the types of TCM modalities available in Singapore?

Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) emphasises the balance of one’s Qi to treat a person’s pre-existing medical illness. TCM modalities to regain one’s Qi balance include:

  • Acupuncture
  • Cupping
  • Herbal medications
  • Massage
  • Movement and concentration exercises
  • Moxibustion

What is the difference between Traditional Chinese Medicine in Singapore and Western Medicine?

Western medication focuses on evidence (laboratory)-based science. Visits to the doctor usually involve a series of tests and scans to identify the cause of your medical problem. Once the cause and diagnosis have been determined, the doctor will prescribe the appropriate treatment, often medications, to treat the condition.

Conversely, Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) is based on the theory of Yin and Yang and the five elements (fire, water, wood, earth, and metal) within the human body. There is a focus on rebalancing one’s Qi to help treat the underlying problem. TCM physicians may utilise various treatment methods, including acupuncture, cupping, and herbal medications, to help manage patients’ symptoms.

Is TCM recognised in Singapore?

TCM is officially recognised in Singapore by the Ministry of Health. All our TCM physicians are registered under the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Board that was established under the Traditional Chinese Medicine Practitioners Act in 2000.

How does TCM manage fertility problems?

It takes two to make a baby hence couples are encouraged to visit a TCM clinic in Singapore together for a consultation. There are many causes to infertility such as ovulation issues, endometrium lining problems or sperm quality issues. Our TCM physicians will address all these issues, prescribe traditional Chinese herbal medicine and/or perform regular acupuncture to help prep your body for conception. You might also want to check how acupuncture and herbal medicine can aid pregnancy.

Apart from TCM, how else can I support my fertility?

While TCM treatments like acupuncture can boost one's fertility, there are several factors that can affect it. For pregnancy to occur, a balanced and healthy diet, lifestyle, and overall health are needed. When visiting a TCM clinic in Singapore for acupuncture and traditional Chinese herbal medication, your TCM physician will also advise you on fertility and self-care wellness methods such as foot soaks and moxibustion to improve the chances of conceiving.

How effective is TCM for fertility?

Several studies have shown that Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) can help improve fertility in many ways including stimulating ovulation, making cycles more regular, and reducing menstrual cramps and PMS. It can also help thicken uterus lining to prepare it for conception. For men’s fertility, TCM herbs are used to address sperm count, motility and morphology. Thomson Chinese Medicine, a TCM clinic in Singapore, has been supporting fertility patients since 2009. Schedule an appointment with our TCM physicians to embark on your fertility journey.

Is TCM reliable?

Yes, it is. Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has been used for thousands of years and helps many people worldwide. Acupuncture is recognized by the World Health Organisation and there are many scientific researches for TCM herbal formulas to test their efficacy for various illnesses. When used correctly under the guidance of a physician, TCM can prevent illness, optimise health and enhance our well-being.
